PMC Deposit Process/Matrix

The NIH Public Access Policy ensures that the public has access to the published results of NIH-funded research. Upon acceptance for publication, NIH requires scientists to submit final peer-reviewed journal manuscripts that arise from NIH funds to the digital archive PubMed Central. To help advance science and improve human health, our policy also requires that the full publication be accessible to the public.

PMC is a free digital archive of full-text scientific literature in biomedical and life sciences.  With a mandate to collect and preserve biomedical literature, PMC serves as a digital counterpart to the National Library of Medicine’s extensive print journal collection.

If your paper was supported by federal funding and is subject to the Public Access Policy, you may deposit your paper in PMC using Method C. Method C is initiated by the author. We do not deposit papers in PMC. Moreover, the full manuscript cannot be made available earlier than 12 months after publication. During this 12-month period, the PMC depository allows you to clearly label articles for the full 12-month embargo. During the depositing process, please note our embargo period of 12 months applies to authors who did not purchase the Open Access option. For authors who purchased Open Access, the embargo is lifted.
